We are Zuricka Hasker and Baci Hillyer — two passionate end-of-life doulas, volunteers in palliative care, and advocates with Dying with Dignity Victoria. Our work has placed us at the bedsides of countless people in their final days. We’ve seen first-hand what it means to die with compassion, with dignity, and with choice and the brutal reality when it doesn't happen this way.
Right now in Victoria, those who choose Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) have only two options: to die at home, or to die in hospital. Both settings can be full of love, but both have their limitations. Aged Care, Palliative Care and hospitals are already stretched and at times at capacity, under strain, families carrying heavy burdens. And with Australia’s ageing population set to double by 2030 and double again by 2050, the reality is clear: we are heading towards a tidal wave of end-of-life need.
Dedicate House is our response. It is our dream: a purpose-built VAD hospice where people can experience a truly compassionate death. A space that honours choice, upholds dignity, and eases suffering. A place that offers families support, community, and peace in the most profound moments of life’s ending.
This is a labour of love, born from lived experience and a professional calling. We believe it is Victoria’s responsibility — and opportunity — to lead the way. To provide compassionate, safe, and dignified options for those who legally choose VAD.
Dedicate House is a dream — but hope alone is not a strategy. We are ready to dedicate our energy and expert team to make it real. We need government and private support, funding, and reform. The time is now. The need is undeniable. And with courage and compassion, together we can create a place where every person has the right to die with dignity and without suffering.
